Microwave Repair in Toronto & GTA
Microwave not heating? Sparking inside? Our certified technicians safely diagnose and repair all types of microwaves — countertop, over-the-range, and built-in models.
Common Microwave Repair Problems We Solve
Our certified technicians diagnose and fix all of the following — usually on the first visit across Toronto and the surrounding GTA.
Microwave Types We Service
Four common configurations — each with different repair characteristics.
Countertop Microwaves
The free-standing units that sit on your counter. Most repairs we diagnose are simple — magnetron failure, door switch issues, blown fuses, turntable motor problems. We'll always tell you honestly if the repair cost exceeds the replacement cost — countertop units start at $150 new, so repair isn't always the smart choice. See our Repair vs Replace section below.
Over-the-Range (OTR) Microwaves
The microwave installed above your stove, combining cooking with vent hood functionality. We service both the microwave components AND the separate vent hood functions: fan motors, light bulbs, charcoal filter issues, and the grease filters that often clog and reduce airflow.
Built-In Microwaves (Trim-Kit)
Built-in microwaves fitted into cabinetry with a custom trim kit. Replacement costs $800 to $3,000+ and usually requires cabinet rework to match dimensions. For this reason, repair almost always makes sense. We service Bosch, Miele, GE Monogram, KitchenAid, and Wolf built-in units.
Drawer & Speed Oven Microwaves
Premium drawer-style microwaves from Sharp and Wolf, plus speed ovens (microwave + convection combo units from Bosch, Miele, Wolf, and KitchenAid). High-end installations starting at $1,500 and going to $5,000+. We diagnose and repair these specialized units, where replacement is rarely the right answer.

Why Microwave DIY Repair Is Genuinely Dangerous
Of all home appliances, microwaves are the one you should never attempt to repair yourself — and we want to be honest about why.
Inside every microwave is a high-voltage capacitor that powers the magnetron (the component that generates microwave energy). This capacitor charges up to over 2,000 volts during operation — about 17 times the voltage of a wall outlet. And critically:
The capacitor can hold a lethal electrical charge for days after the microwave has been unplugged. Touching the wrong terminal during inspection has caused fatalities, including in trained electricians who weren't aware of the specific risk.
Professional microwave repair requires:
- A certified discharge tool to safely bleed the capacitor before any work begins
- Specific knowledge of which components must be tested in which order
- High-voltage diode and capacitor testing equipment
- Awareness of magnetron radiation patterns and seal integrity
Our technicians are trained in microwave-specific safety procedures and carry the certified discharge equipment required for safe repair.
If your microwave is malfunctioning, please don't open the back panel. Common DIY guides on YouTube routinely omit the capacitor discharge step — and the consequences can be fatal. Unplug the unit, leave it alone, and call TrueFix at (647) 874-2990 for a safe professional diagnosis.
Repair vs Replace: An Honest Microwave Guide
Microwaves are the one appliance where repair isn't always the right answer. Here's the math.
Most appliance repair companies will quote you for any repair, no matter what. We won't. For microwaves specifically, the repair-vs-replace decision depends heavily on what type of microwave you have. Here's the honest math:
| Microwave Type | Replacement Cost | Typical Repair Cost | Worth Repairing? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Countertop | $150–$400 | $150–$300 | Usually NOT — replacement is typically smarter |
| Over-the-Range (OTR) | $300–$800 | $200–$400 | Depends on age — under 5 yrs, repair; over 7, lean replace |
| Built-In / Trim-Kit | $800–$3,000+ | $250–$600 | Almost always YES — cabinet rework adds cost |
| Drawer Microwave (Sharp, Wolf) | $1,500–$3,500 | $300–$700 | Almost always YES |
| Speed Oven (Combo) | $2,500–$5,000+ | $400–$900 | Always YES |
Even on a countertop microwave that “isn't worth repairing,” we may still find a quick fix — a $40 door switch replacement, for example. But for major repairs like magnetron replacement on an older unit, we'll often recommend replacement instead.

Microwave Maintenance Tips That Extend Lifespan
Simple habits that prevent the most common service calls.
- Never run an empty microwave — without food or water to absorb the microwave energy, the magnetron overheats and fails prematurely.
- Don't slam the door — door switch failures are the #1 cause of “won't start” issues. There are three interlock switches per door that all must work; aggressive door closure stresses all of them.
- Clean spills inside the cavity immediately. Food residue on cavity walls absorbs microwave energy and creates hot spots that can cause arcing and burn marks.
- Replace the over-the-range charcoal filter every 6 months if your OTR microwave vents indoor air, and clean the grease filter monthly in soapy water.
- Keep the door seal clean — wipe the perimeter weekly with a damp cloth. Build-up here can break the seal and allow microwave leakage over time.
- Never use metal cookware, foil, or twist-ties inside — arcing damages the cavity walls permanently.
