Range Hood Repair in Toronto & GTA
Range hoods are the appliance most repair companies refuse to service. We don't. Whether you have a basic under-cabinet hood, a premium Zephyr chimney, or a ductless condo recirculating system — we diagnose and fix it properly, on the first visit.
Common Range Hood Repair Problems We Solve
Our certified technicians diagnose and fix all of the following — usually on the first visit across the GTA.
Range Hood Types We Service
Six common configurations — each with different repair considerations.
Under-Cabinet Hoods
The most common configuration in Toronto kitchens — mounted under your upper cabinets. We service Broan, Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, and other builder-grade brands. Common repairs include fan motor replacement, fan speed switches, halogen and LED bulb assemblies, and grease filter clip mechanisms.
Wall-Mount Chimney Hoods
Decorative chimney-style hoods that mount directly to the wall, popular in renovations. Brands include Zephyr, Faber, Elica, Bosch, Miele, and BEST. Service includes proprietary fan assemblies, touch panel control boards, perimeter aspiration systems, and the stainless ductwork covers that often misalign over time.
Island Chimney Hoods
Designed for kitchen islands where the hood vents straight up through the ceiling. We service the same brand range as wall-mounts, plus handle the specific ducting and suspension issues island hoods have. Premium brands like Zephyr Verona and Faber Cylindra fall in this category.
Ductless / Recirculating Hoods
Common in Toronto condos where external venting isn't possible. These filter air through a charcoal filter and recirculate it back into the kitchen. We service motor and fan issues, control panels, and the charcoal filter replacement (which most owners don't realize needs doing every 6 months).
Downdraft Hoods
Retractable hoods that rise from the countertop — common with Jenn-Air, GE Monogram, and some Wolf cooktops. Specialty repair work including the lift motor, scissor mechanisms, and the downward ducting that runs under the kitchen floor.
Built-In / Insert Hoods
Custom-built hoods with the motor assembly installed inside a cabinet-built enclosure. Premium brands include Zephyr Power, BEST inserts, Wolf, and Vent-A-Hood. These typically have the highest CFM ratings and the most powerful motors — and they're almost always worth repairing given the installation investment.
Ducted vs Ductless (Recirculating) Range Hoods
Two completely different systems with different failure modes.
Ducted Range Hoods
Ducted range hoods extract air through a duct that exits the home — through a roof vent, wall vent, or up through the soffit. They're far more effective at removing smoke, steam, and odours. Common failures include fan motor wear, damper flap stuck open (causing winter backdraft), and disconnected ductwork above the cabinet line. We diagnose airflow loss by measuring CFM at the hood and verifying the full duct path from hood to outside vent.
Ductless (Recirculating) Range Hoods
Ductless hoods are common in Toronto condo and apartment kitchens where external venting isn't possible. Air is filtered through a charcoal filter and returned to the kitchen. They remove odours but not steam or heat. Charcoal filters need replacement every 6 months — most owners don't know this, and reduced airflow often gets misdiagnosed as a motor problem. We always check filter condition before quoting motor work.
High-CFM Range Hoods and Ontario Makeup Air Requirements
Ontario Building Code requires that high-extraction range hoods (typically those rated above 400 CFM, depending on home size and other ventilation) be paired with an interlocked makeup air system in tight, energy-efficient homes. Without makeup air, a powerful range hood can depressurize the home — causing dangerous backdraft from gas furnaces, water heaters, or fireplaces.
If your range hood has stopped working in a newer Toronto build, the issue may actually be the interlocked makeup air damper rather than the hood itself. We can diagnose the full system, identify whether the failure is in the hood, the makeup air supply, or the interlock relay — and recommend the appropriate repair path.

Repair vs Replace: When Is It Worth Fixing Your Range Hood?
For most range hoods, repair almost always wins.
Builder-grade Broan and similar hoods typically last 10–15 years. Premium Zephyr, Faber, Elica, Bosch, and Miele units often run 15–20+ years. The 50% rule applies, but range hoods tilt heavily toward repair: most failures are motor or capacitor issues — $150–$350 fixes against $300–$3,000+ replacement costs.
Repair Makes Sense
- Fan motor or capacitor failure on any premium hood (Zephyr, Faber, Elica, BEST, Bosch, Miele)
- Control board, light strip, or damper issues on any hood
- Replacement requires uninstalling the old hood, modifying ductwork, and matching dimensions — labour costs not included in the price tag
- Built-in / insert hoods — always worth repairing given the installation investment
- Repair quote is under 50% of comparable replacement cost
Replacement May Be Smarter
- Builder-grade under-cabinet hood under $200 new with a failed fan motor that quotes $200 to repair
- Rusted-out or damaged hood housing
- Multiple component failures on an aged builder-grade unit
- Obsolete control boards no longer manufactured
Range Hood Error Codes & Indicators We Diagnose
Premium hoods have diagnostic displays. Most builder-grade hoods use indicator lights — we read both.
Bosch
- E1
- Motor fault detected
- E2
- Control board / touch panel fault
- E5
- Filter cleaning reminder (informational, not a fault)
Miele
- F70
- Motor speed sensor fault
Zephyr
- Flashing fan icon
- Fan motor fault
- Solid red indicator
- Control board issue
- “CLEAN” indicator
- Filter service reminder
Faber / Elica
Touch panel proprietary indicators — we use brand-specific diagnostic procedures.
Broan / NuTone / KitchenAid
Most models use indicator lights rather than coded errors. We diagnose by symptom (fan speed loss, control panel non-response, light failure) rather than code.

Range Hood Maintenance Tips That Prevent Service Calls
The single most important thing you can do for your range hood: clean the filters.
- Clean grease filters monthly — soak in hot soapy water for 15 minutes, then scrub gently with a non-abrasive brush. Many “fan motor weakness” calls are actually clogged filter calls.
- Replace charcoal filters in ductless hoods every 6 months — these cannot be cleaned, only replaced. Most owners never replace them.
- Run the hood for 2–3 minutes after you finish cooking to clear residual smoke and humidity from the ducting.
- Use the lowest fan speed sufficient for the task — higher speeds wear motors faster.
- Inspect the external damper flap annually (the louvered cover where the duct exits your home). A stuck-closed damper kills airflow; a stuck-open damper lets cold winter air into your ducts.
- Wipe the hood exterior weekly with a stainless-steel-safe cleaner to prevent grease buildup that's difficult to remove later.
"Stellar service, really. Booked in the morning on-line and they were able to come the same day. Sent a photo of the appliance model information and a description of the problem ahead and Vitalii anticipated the problem enough to arrive with the needed part in hand. Quickly confirmed the diagnosis, replaced the part, and everything is back to normal. Best appliance repair service I've ever received."
Why Other Repair Companies Say “No” to Range Hoods — and We Don't
It's the appliance category most repair shops avoid. Here's why, and why we service it anyway.
Across Toronto, range hoods are the appliance most homeowners struggle to find a repair company for. Many appliance repair shops avoid them because:
- Range hood jobs often require ladder work or overhead diagnosis
- Manufacturers like Broan, Zephyr, Faber, and Elica don't publish full schematics, so technicians need real experience rather than just manuals
- Parts margins are lower than dishwashers or fridges
- Many call-outs turn out to be cleaning issues rather than repair work
TrueFix services range hoods properly. We carry common fan motors, capacitors, control boards, LED light strips, and damper assemblies in our service vans. We service ducted hoods, ductless (recirculating) condo systems, under-cabinet hoods, wall and island chimneys, downdraft units, and built-in inserts.
If we can't fix your range hood on the first visit, we'll tell you honestly whether replacement is more economical — and we won't charge you for time we couldn't solve the problem in.
